  1. Radio message – Vettel

    Lap 19/66

Vettel: “Do you have a gap?”

    Engineer: “No not yet.”

Vettel: “You should find one then, I dodn’t care if there’s traffic. Pit me when you can.”

  2. Get Involved

Scott Coe: Well done Ferrari, you finally listen to the whole world screaming at you… Let Leclerc through!

PBM: Four Honda engines inside the top 10.

Alex Lloyd: Nice to see Ferrari’s Vettel obsession once again seemingly compromise Leclerc’s race and lose them both a podium position

  3. Race leader, fastest man on track. It’s all Lewis Hamilton.

  4. Vettel’s sounding a bit stroppy over the team radio, wanting to get rid of those tyres that he himself wrecked with an ambitious attempt to take the race lead on the first lap.

It didn’t work out too well, but at least he gave it a go. “Pit me when you can,” is him pleading to come in.

  5. ‘Bad vibrations’ for Vettel

    Lap 16/66

    Jennie Gow

BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter

One of the mechanics has run over to the pit wall, had a chat with Ferarri management and run back over the garage. Vettel has been on the team radio said he’s got bad vibrations and he wants a pit stop.

  6. Flying through the field…!

  7. Haas could be zooming up this table by the end of the day. Mercedes currently heading for a one-two finish again. Something familiar about that.

  8. Haas are on course for best of the rest title and a good points haul. Romain Grosjean seventh and Kevin Magnussen eighth, just as they started.

  9. ‘A few laps late’

    Lap 13/66

    Jack Nicholls

BBC Radio 5 Live F1 commentator

There we go, Ferrari may have done it a few laps late, but Charles Leclerc overtakes his team-mate.

  10. The orange-clad Max Verstappen fans are in Spain in great numbers. But, not for the first time this season, it’s looking a bit lonely for the Dutchman. Three seconds off Bottas in second and five clear of the fourth-placed man.

That is now Charles Leclerc as Sebastian Vettel, on the damaged tyres, moves over to let his team-mate through. Why they didn’t do that a couple of laps earlier? Who knows?

  11. The big climber is Nico Hulkenberg so far. He’s advanced five places after starting from the pits. Lando Norris has dropped six spots after going wide early on.

Kayleigh: Who’s going to have their race ruined by Ferrari’s inability to work out decent pit strategies?

Stewart: “Charles is faster than you. Can you confirm you understand this message.”

Andrew Ives: @danielricciardo must be feeling pretty sick down in 12th miles behind the Red Bull. Brave move to @RenaultF1Team but he must be regretting it every lap.

  13. Charles Leclerc attacks Sebastian Vettel. No talk of being held back by his team. Leclerc weaves left, weaves right, but there is no way through. We spoke of two Mercedes potentially taking each other out? What if the Ferraris do that?

  14. Ferrari team orders?

    Jolyon Palmer

Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

We have an interesting situation at Ferrari: Vettel flat spotted his tyres, and Charles Leclerc is within a second of Vettel – he’s done the fastest first sector and he’s now being held up by his team-mate.

In China, they were quick to swap positions, so will they do so today?

  15. How they stand

This is how it stands at the moment. Lewis Hamilton will jump back to the top as long as he finishes ahead of Valtteri Bottas.

  16. Fastest lap for Lewis Hamilton, who extends his lead to 2.6 seconds. Max Verstappen is 4.7 seconds back. Vettel is fourth 0.8 seconds ahead of Leclerc, whose tyres are in better condition.

  17. Radio message – Sainz

    Lap 7/66

Engineer: “Ricciardo close this time, half a second.”

Sainz: “Yeah, I have no pace and don’t know why.”

  18. Antonio Giovinazzi is in the pits to come on to hard tyres. That is only seven laps in. Mavericks.

  19. Patrick McLaughlin: Hoping we don’t get the usual Barcelona formation finish after lap 1. Circuit doesn’t benefit from being a testing venue.

Josh Earl: yes Lewis, perfect start!!

Chris Doherty: Good to see Gasly had a solid qualifying session, can’t be easy being compared to Max
